Whether I agree or disagree with the statement these officers were making or with the reasoning behind it is besides the point.
… is just plain childish.
It is a man’s funeral.
A husband, a father, someone’s son, somebody’s brother, many people’s friend, and – believe it or not – when you walk up to the family after viewing the body, that’s what matters the most.
It is a funeral, and to choose this time and place to either actually take a significant social stand or merely pull off some politically motivated stunt is thoroughly disrespectful to this man, this husband, this father, this son, this brother, this friend.
You want to spit in the Mayor’s face? Fine. Go for it.
Stage a sit-in over at City Hall, picket twenty-four hours a day outside Gracie Mansion, book one of your representatives (YOUR representatives, not your Union’s over-paid mouthpieces) on every single talk show known to man or embroider patches on your uniforms …
hell, march right up to the guy, sit on his chest or put him in a choke hold and piss in his face for all I care…
all the more power to you.
But neither de Blasio nor Al Sharpton nor any of the looters down in Ferguson pulled the trigger on Officer Ramos and his partner.
(I mean, get real: you think this guy stepped over the line as soon as – and not a moment before – de Blasio expressed some perceived support for those demonstrators protesting the choking death of Eric Garner? Like, if the Mayor called in the tanks and imposed a city-wide curfew this guy just would have stayed in Baltimore and minded his own business?
(You figure this sociopath first stepped beyond his crack-and-testosterone stupor into his delusional quest for martyrdom once he got the wink-and-a-nod go-ahead from Big Al?)
The rest of the story surrounding this tragic event should have been set aside long enough to lay the man in the ground without turning it into a public relations extravaganza.
This show of solidarity was reduced to a cheap stunt because the cameras were rolling.
Show the man some respect. Show his family some respect.
At least pretend you were there to honor his memory.
This gesture was not meant for Officer Ramos. It was meant to flip off the Mayor.
And this animosity has been going on since Mayor de Blasio looked into increased civilian oversight and accountability for the police force.
And the Mayor was not the one who pulled the trigger.
If the cold-blooded, twisted crud who drove all the way from Maryland to waste a couple of cops was on that much of a mission, there is not a single person in this picture – much less the Mayor – who could have stopped it from happening.
A homicidal maniac snuck up on two cops. Kills them. End of story.
Everything else is just trash talk.
This comes off too much like Labor/Management posturing.
It was wildly inappropriate at that time, at that place and under those circumstances.
If not for their badges, their dignity and the thorough absence of vile, hate-filled, barely literate picket signs there would have been no difference between these guys and the asshats from Westboro Baptist picketing a fallen Marine’s funeral ’cause God hates fags.
You proud people are so much better than this.
