And how many lost souls assign the faces of only the ones they’ve known to the visage of The Past but never their own.
The saintly faces of those who brought life to you, who nurtured you, who taught you about unforgiving life and unconditional love need to guide you
Sometimes the face is that of their newborn first child. It is a face you should be able to see forever.
The face of your mate waking up in the morning next to you the first time, starting each and every of your new days since with love and comfort. This face needs to inspire you.
The face of God in every tree, hill or mountain, each stream, river or ocean you see should bring you peace.
There are other faces.
Your pain and strength, sorrow and joy, terror and comfort are carried on your back.
No one else’s.
Sometimes the person who caused you pain and the person who continues to cause you pain can actually be two different people.
Sometimes the pain we still remember from someone in the past is the pain we ourselves allowed and continue to allow to have followed us from the past, to walk along with us, to talk to us, to tease us …
to follow us from whatever time and from whatever condition and from whatever person to whatever who and whatever where we could actually be today, yet still feeling that pain as if it were more than just a fading memory.
No one should have that power over us.
The face that wields that power is our own.
We ourselves are the only ones who have ever walked our own path.
To leave some of those faces well in The Past, to acknowledge the pain they forced upon us, but to live life to the fullest in spite of remembering that pain…
that will prevent that face, that person from ever gaining the power over us that only we have.
They will never cause that pain again. And we each need to learn how to use that power within ourselves.
Headed into my 50's figuring I finally had at least almost all the the right answers.
Passed into my 60's realizing I might not have asked the right questions to begin with.
Oh shit ... gotta start all over again.
